The Importance Of Treating Dogs Like Dogs

When we take on a dog, no matter the origin of that dog, we need to remember they are just that - a dog.

When we take on a dog, no matter the origin of that dog, we need to remember they are just that - a dog.

They are not people; the ‘fur baby’ movement is in fact rather damaging.

They do not understand our technology addiction, our financial priorities, our time constraints or our traumas.

Dogs are powerful creatures but ultimately, no matter the genetics or behavioural problems, you are 100% in charge of what your dog can do every day.

All they do, no matter the breed, is start their day and see what you give them.

Sure, there are some dogs who have had too much schedule and immediately want breakfast on their terms.

There are also some dogs who, sadly, only need a glimpse of the outside world to feel anxious.

But those dogs don’t know there’s a life outside their immediate feelings – they cannot compare, contrast or assess in the same way people can.

Of course your dog is excited to play – you’ve been working all day!

Of course your nervous dog is lashing out at the park – she doesn’t speak English, and doesn’t understand the park is not an inherently dangerous place.

And yes of course your whiny dog is going to whine when you’re home – whining works when he wants to be let out at 7am, so why wouldn’t it work now?

That’s how dogs learn – associatively.

I know I ask too much of my dogs every single day – be barked at for an hour whilst I help this client, wait your turn another hour whilst I cook & do the dishwasher, sleep in the van because we need the spare crate for our new guest.

Next time you’re frustrated your dog isn’t being a perfect robot, ask yourself: am I a perfect robot? Have I set clear & consistent expectations (or am I weak)? Are my dog’s needs being met overall?

I bet you will answer No to one or more of the above questions. I know I would!
