The Canisocial Company – Who are we and what do we do?
Our business was founded with one clear mission in mind – to re-socialise our nation’s dogs so that their owners can enjoy going on walks again.
With reactivity around every corner and out of control dogs everywhere you go, sometimes you want to give up. Perhaps your dog was under-socialized and has become fearful, perhaps he’s been to the park to sprint around with other dogs a few too many times; either way, it’s common to have a dog who isn’t as reliable around other dogs as you may wish.
The appalling standard of information on the Internet doesn’t help. With some people advising you to greet everyone in order to correctly socialize your dog and with others telling you to exclusively work on ‘engagement’ & keep your dog away from other dogs, it’s easy to feel confused & helpless.
We want to restore balance in the world of dog socialization. We know that socialisation looks different per dog due to unique genetics & behavioral history. We also know that hardly anyone manages to do it right first time; we’re here to restore the equilibrium with those dog owners too.
Your relationship with your dog is the most crucial aspect of your time together, but we need to achieve a certain level of socialization with other dogs purely because we can’t avoid them in today’s society. Your reserved dog doesn’t have to play with other dogs if that’s not in their nature, and your friendly dog may need a few private playdates to fill their social cup, but we want to give dog owners the gift of enjoying walks again.
Some dogs need more impulse control & obedience work to manage excitement around other dogs; some dogs need to learn to briefly tolerate others in order to continue with the walk. At Canisocial Co, we understand that everyone is different – that’s why our bespoke approach per dog ends up restoring harmony in so many households.
As for who we are – there’s the interesting part!
Adam Wilson of Valorant K9 Academy has rehabilitated a large number of reactive, nervous and even aggressive dogs during his career so far. One thing he’s noticed during this time is how many people finish their behavioural training then look to the next part – ‘how can I begin to enjoy walks & trips out with my dog?’ Adam believes every dog-owner team have the right to enjoy free time together in a manner that is safe & fun.
Isabella Hawthorne of Ellingham K9 Services (no longer an active business) has always specialised in socialisation, but noticed an imbalance in her career as a drug detection dog handler too – it’s essential for working dogs to be able to ignore other dogs working nearby, but this skill is not extended to our pets. How would the dog world look if less people were afraid to take their nervous dog out because of rude, off-lead dogs? How would the dog world look if more friendly dogs had some impulse control & neutrality?
It’s that middle ground of neutrality that Adam & Isabella are working towards with Canisocial Co.
